Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in McMurray just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hindering its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area frequently to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have accumulated during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in McMurray will probably go up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Kowalski Heating, Cooling & Plumbing in McMurray, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
